Pure caster WD - Page 2

a black kid: "while reading the OP, i was reminded of how often people DO get criticized for doing builds that aren't the "norm".

..or even in wow, i played a destruction warlock for a long time, and would always get asked why i didnt make a mage.."

i had the same experience with the paladin(my favorite character), when i played d2 in the beginning. People would ask me why i didnt make a barb or amazon, because they were supposedly stronger from their point of view, yet they would be surprised, that he could usually kill most of them with ease, and so people would ask me about skills, items, stats et cetera.

i Just think people like to start out with something easy to get a feel for the game...however this time(comparing barb with monk) ill probably start with a barb for aesthetic reasons, as its probably more enjoyable to cleave a demons head with an axe rather than playing a bald, fullbearded man hitting a monster with his stick...**** that didnt come out right hahah|||I thought, the witch doctor was a pure caster. What else should he be?|||Quote:

At the moment, most people believe him to be a summoner/caster hybrid.

The theory is that the Witch Doctor's spells are not designed to be able to kill absolutely everything before they murder him, so he needs pets (like Zombie Dogs) as a form of crowd control and to tank while he deals the real damage.

The Wizard is considered a 'pure' spellcaster in that pets are not a necessity for her to succeed.

A 'pure' summoner would have very little damage output and would rely on her/his pets to dish out most of the damage.

However, I'm hoping that a Witch Doctor build which doesn't use any pets at all can still be just as efficient as a build which does, even though it might not be considered a 'normal' way to play the Witch Doctor.

Unlike Zombie Dogs, I don't consider spells such as 'Wall of Zombies' or 'Plague of Locusts' to be proper 'pet' spells. They're just spells with a creature theme as opposed to being an actual pet in its own right.|||Quote:

Well, the Necromancer had a pure caster build where you just focus on beefing up his offensive bone skills and support it with some curses..

Bone necs were viable simply because of Enigma. that's a fact|||I don't see why not though. This was the magic of D2. The fact that I could make a pure build of poison and bone, Poison/ summon, bone/summon, summon/curses, bone/curses/ poison/curses etc. Even though some may not be viable it was certainly fun experimenting with them.

Since it still going to be a while before D3's release, I would think that a caster type build would be possible. With added runes and traits it should be interesting trying to find one.|||Horrify and Mass Confusion can control a crowd just as well as pets can while you deal out the damage. Sounds pretty good to me|||I'm sure it would be possible, but it wouldn't be that efficient. Unless there are some more slow/stun/chill type skills, for crowd control/slowing, you'd always be better off with a tank. Even if you only had 1 point in whatever you were tanking with, just to make the enemies swarm and hold still for your spells.

D2 Sorc could go faster without a merc, in some builds, but she had unlimited teleport and lots of very fast hitting crowd spells, and lots of ways to slow enemies. The WD seems to largely lack those options in D3.

The higher level WD attack spells have never been publicly playable though, so it's possible that some, maybe with runes, will be strong enough to slow enemies and deal with large mobs.|||The thing is to me 99% of the WD skills are summons or semi-summons in feel.

100% Non Summoning skills are IMO: Poison Dart, Fire bomb, Soul Harvest, Acid Cloud, Horrify, Mass Confusion, Spirit Walk and maybe Spirit Barrage.

All the rest to me fall under the summoner skill group.|||The Witch Doctor will be my first class. I'm thinking a blood mage/spirit caster type...
