So here i am thinking about pure caster WD. I know "why don't you make a wizard u twat", well i don't like to. I like hopping frogs and spiders.
I'm at work atm so i can't post the skill list that i was thinking for the build, but it mainly consisted with Vitality boosts, boost to damage from Vit and spells that differ from eachother. Spells i taught would be great are toads, Pit of Fire and Soul Harvest. I also taught a direct dot would be a nice addition, but if 15 points is the limit in a skill then 100 points won't last forever.
These spells provide 3 different damagetypes, all posses ability to hit multiple targets and toads can be used as the main spell as it can hit multiple times on the same target if it's big.
The things that worry me are that will WD be able to survive at all in melee eaven with the vitality skills and survival skills (unkillable and shadow walk are a must for every build. Atleast few points to let you use them.) As players aren't able to spam potions i see the lack of life leech as the biggest problem. DoT life leech would be optimal if you ask me.
OFC this build is not viable if some summons come as mandatory and really good with only few points invested in them but i see the vitality boosts and some survival skills as the bonus i get from dropping off the summon skills.
One bad thing also is that the build consists mainly on low tier skills wich could set the build back alot.
PS: for the sake of conversation, we should assume that the damages of spells/summons aren't what they will be in the end. If some spell sucks now it most likely isin't the final version of it.|||It's wierd talking about an actual build for the WD with all of his NYI skills. Even more than the Wiz and Barb, which too will surely be changed a lot until release. It's actually closer to building a Monk, which is ridiculous since he has only like 8 skills.
So anyway, what I'm saying is it's not even fun to discuss this without enough amount of skills YesImplented or even a real grasp of what is the WD.
However, I would like to see a Solo Melee WD. Screw Summons, this one doesn't need anybody besides some leafy shank and Firebats (which is just awesome). Combine that with some Terror and Mass Confusion and it would be hilarious.|||I don't see the Witch Doctor as a Pure Caster, he's a Summoner. Think of all the Summoning spells the WD has. Zombie Dog, Charger, Grasp of the Dead, Gargantua, Wall of Zombies, Hex, Corpse Spiders, Locusts, Plague of Toads, Firebats, Pit of Fire, Fetish Army. The only real direct damage spells he has are Spirit Barrage and Soul Harvest. I don't count Skull flame or Acid Cloud as spells cause he's just throwing/detonating things not actually casting.
All together he's still remains a ranged magic user, so what difference does it make what he's called.|||Quote:

now you're just splitting hairs... generally people talk of 3 types of classes, melee, caster, and physical ranged.
when you summon, you are casting a spell to summon that monster.
if you want to call him a summoner, then dont call the others casters/melee, specify them even more... like, the wizard is not a caster, he's an arcanist. monk is not melee, he's a martial arts fighter etc....|||Well, he had mentioned pure caster, and when I think of a pure caster, I think of direct damage spells. Not summoning minions. To each his own i guess.|||Well, the Necromancer had a pure caster build where you just focus on beefing up his offensive bone skills and support it with some curses. That's viable, so I don't see anything wrong with a pure caster Witch Doc, especially not considering that his offensive skills look better and more satisfying than than those of the Necro in my opinion.
Though I do admit that corpse explosion is an awesome skill >

LOL thats all I have to say.|||I'm sure that you can build a WD that's a pure caster. The Firebombs seem to do a llot of damage and Locusts gives you another source of damage. But you may be missing out on a lot of cool summoning skills.|||Personally I think it would be good to mix it up so you can have your minions doing the tanking while you sit back and own the enemies with your spells. If you only specialize in one thing you will just get shut down.|||while reading the OP, i was reminded of how often people DO get criticized for doing builds that aren't the "norm". and by that i mean the 'most powerful' or 'most common' builds... its the same in every game, people would wonder why in the world i would do a staff pally (up'd ribcracker was the bomb) or a immolation arrow amazon, which kinda sucked (cause i liked the sound)... or even in wow, i played a destruction warlock for a long time, and would always get asked why i didnt make a mage.....
point is, if the class has skills, use them ANY way you want... and in fact, i enjoy these games so much, i'll usually have 4-5 of the same class just to have different builds. and with retirement system.... should be great times... anyways... point is, dont be a hater against people who dont play the a class like YOU think it should.
