Why the Dagger?

[:1]In the official Character selection page:

Wizard: Staff

Barbarian: Sword

Monk: Battlestaff

WD: Dagger?

Does anyone know why? I dont recall any dagger specific skills. I would think wands would be better suited.|||Wands don't associate with voodoo the way a dagger does.|||What about the functionality? Or are we willing to accept it as ornamental? That would be a let down, considering the other characters' weapons fulfilling both thematic and functional components.|||Well, we have no way of knowing if these daggers are going to get WD boosts, or if it's maybe some Unique for the WD (foreshadowing or something).

I'd be willing to say it's ornamental though. He likely isn't a char people will take into melee, so whatever weapon slot he has, it has to fit the character.|||Quote:

His current skill selection doesn't exactly encourage melee fighting. Unlike the Wiz the WD has no skills that would aid him when he goes head to head. Pity, because Blizz could come up with a lot of skills that would be excellent for use in melee instead of more variations on the same DoT spells.|||Why Not the dagger?|||@ Mantis - What kind of melee skills were you thinking of?

If daggers were ritualistic, with inventory artwork, and in-game graphical representation that set them aside, with caster bonuses, then I guess I can defer.

Its sad that daggers, as a weapon class, were hardly ever used in D2 except for the MF one and the elite caster one, i forget their names. So in the interest of not creating an entire class of weapons which gamers collectively ignore, the solution could be to leave out melee functionality, and focus on boosts, and caster bonuses. I don't see why else someone would pick daggers over a superior 1-handed sword/mace.|||Wizardspike (the elite you mention) is probably a good indicator of what I was talking about.

In fact, that very weapon was used in the texts by the necromancers.|||Daggers are a nice weapon, but their approach on D2 was quite unfair (as in underwhelming)...

If they manage to make daggers good items, mainly for our local voodoo maniacs... That will be excellent...|||Quote:

Cheese and Crackers.

Yeap, i agree, my guess is that in D3 the dagger will be to the Wd what in D2 the wand was to the sorc.
